EN GOD ZAG DAT HET GOED WAS (Chris, English version below)

21 december 2018 - Miami, Florida, Verenigde Staten

(Goede Scrabblewoorden ja, we doen inderdaad soms spelletjes.)

AND GOD WAS PLEASED WITH WHAT HE SAW
Howler monkeyAnd on the seventh day of creation, God looked at his work and he was pleased with what he saw. He had separated the sea from the land, created plants and animals, and the sky with the stars and the moon above it. What a success it was, Costa Rica was finished!

In spite of the weekly church visit in my youth and a, under threat of hell and damnation, successful primary school career at the School with the Bible, I have not been biblical in recent decades. It surprised me that during our stay in Costa Rica I had some associations with biblical stories from my youth.

The comparison of Costa Rica with paradise is unmistakable. The country was created by active volcanism. On the fertile ground that results from it, everything grows faster. The country has a thousand shades of green, the water is intense blue. And everything grows bigger: the pineapples, the spiders, the trees, the crocodiles and even the sea turtles.

As far as those last two are concerned, they have been wandering around the earth for 300 million years. If someone tells you that, and you yourself are watching such an animal live, the impact of my own contribution to world history suddenly becomes very relative. Something else is that 500,000 plant and animal species occur in Costa Rica. That is almost 15 times as much as at home. 6% of all flora and fauna in the world can be found in the country that is only a quarter larger than the Netherlands. The 'bio-intensity' and 'biodiversity' are the largest in the world. (Good Scrabble words yes, sometimes we do games.)

My cautious conclusion is that there are almost 10 million species of plants and animals worldwide. Then I leave out of consideration what by climate change and the intervention of the people meanwhile has been destroyed. Which would mean that God was very busy on the third and fifth day of creation when he created all plants and animals.

Anyway, everyone is entitled to his own convictions. This also applies within our family. Where one considers New York as the highlight of our trip so far, that is for another Kenya, and yet another Cuba. The nice thing about Costa Rica is that we all felt at home. The climate is wonderful, the diversity of sea, mountains, jungle and inhabited area fascinating. And you hardly see real poverty. The 5.5 million inhabitants are proud of their land and appreciate nature. 25% of the territory of Costa Rica is a protected area where there is room for all life that we, as people, threaten in so many places. We have enjoyed all those zoo animals that live in freedom: monkeys, snakes, leatherback turtles, dolphins, sloths, anteaters, armadillos, spiders, frogs, parrots, toucans, colibris and dozens of other species of which I can not remember the name or have never heard it had.

Are we now completely unworldly and looking for a cabin in the jungle of Costa Rica? No, thanks to an excellent Wi-Fi connection, I have been confronted with comments from Anouk and jokes from Ali B during the blind auditions of The Voice last week in a kind of marathon broadcast of several evenings. And thanks to YouTube, I have snatched a tear at the last episode of Peter Heerschop's Dear Marianne in the latest episode of Radio 538’s morning show Evers Staat Op. A world without Edwin in the morning, without Niels and Rick, Henk and Peter, I am not looking forward to it ...
