COOLING-DOWN (Paulien, English version below)
16 juli 2019 - Northwich, Verenigd Koninkrijk
COOLING-DOWN (Paulien)
After lions on the savannah, volcanoes in Indonesia, bird spiders in Suriname and the desert in Uzbekistan, we are now in England and Scotland after almost 11 months of traveling. I call it the cooling down period. For our family to get used again after 11 months to the Dutch weather, the European way of life and our own food we have been longing for: good cheese, apple syrup, tasty yogurt, hagelslag (chocolat sprinkles), bitterkoekjes (typical Dutch cookies)..
Of course all the adventures were great to experience. We have seen how beautiful the world is, we have met sweet and hospitable people and were able to experience their cultures. We will never forget that. A year of travel does something with you. You realise how good life is at home. We already knew that, but after sleeping in hammocks, doing the dishes outside with lots of mosquitoes as company, traveling in trains, the heat in the desert, cold showers and much more, the prospect of our own comfortable home is very tempting.
Cuddly England is a pleasant surprise. I had no idea ... we were initially going to pick up our new familymember (long story). And he cannot leave the country until he is 15 weeks old because of the rabies vaccination (also a long story). So, flexible as we are, we changed our plans and embarked on a road trip through England and Scotland for our last month. Cute cottages, caravans at campinggrounds, apartments and sometimes a hotel. The search criteria on Booking.com contains for the first time ‘pets’, so the availability is limited. Doesn't matter, it works out well and we have a nice route that takes us through England and Scotland for a month. The return journey by train through the tunnel on August 1st has already been booked. That day our year of travelling is really over and we can go back to our own little palace.
Now that we are touring here in my old Sharan, I can only say that the English landscape is fantastically beautiful. All the history, castles, stone fences and hedges along the roads, where you only spot your oncoming car through the curves at the very last moment, the beautiful villages, the lush flowers in the gardens, the hills, as if you were driving through a fairy tale landscape.
Because of our Teddy, which we picked up at 12 weeks, it is like having another baby at home. With getting up before dawn when you hear him, so that he pees outside and not on the carpet in the living room, every 2 hours outside for a walk that he does not always feel like, teeth that are used everywhere, but especially lots of love! He is a cuddly little boy and thank goodness he does not puke all over the car during car journeys that sometimes take half a day. He is snoozing in his travel bench on the lap of one of the children. He gets super excited in every new home and scans the area directly for items where he can put his teeth into. And for the children it is a supplement to their daily time use: "Mom, I have 60% less screen time since we have Teddy," our youngest proudly says.
In short, before school starts again, work, hockey, horse riding and all those other activities, we enjoy each other this last month. That is our cooling down after a year of traveling. Because on August 1st it is really over.
of hoe vies of hoe leuk.
